What is a marine retaining wall — is that the same as a seawall?+
Mostly, yes. “Marine retaining wall”, “retaining seawall”, and “bulkhead” all describe a wall at the waterline that holds the bank back; the engineering difference is what it's designed to resist. A wall facing open-water wave energy is a seawall; one retaining soil on a calm shoreline is a bulkhead; and a wall set back from the water on dry land is a standard retaining wall.
If your wall touches the water — or the lake authority has jurisdiction over your shoreline — it's built and permitted as a marine structure. Here's how to tell which one your property actually needs.
Do you build wood retaining seawalls?+
Yes — treated-timber bulkheads are still a legitimate option on sheltered East Texas shorelines. Marine-grade treated pine walers and lagging behind timber or steel king piles, with a proper deadman tie-back, runs meaningfully cheaper than vinyl up front and looks at home on a wooded lot.
The honest trade-off is service life: expect 20–25 years from a well-built timber wall at East Texas water chemistry, versus 40+ for vinyl and 50+ for steel or concrete. We quote wood against vinyl side-by-side so you can price the difference over the life of the wall, not just the install.
How much does a seawall or bulkhead cost per foot?+
Plan on $150–$450 per linear foot installed on the East Texas lakes — the same range our on-site estimator uses. Sheltered-cove timber and vinyl bulkheads land at the bottom of the range; tall, wave-exposed steel or concrete walls with engineered tie-backs land at the top.

What's the difference between a seawall and a bulkhead?+
Seawalls are designed to resist active wave energy and protect open-water shorelines. They have heavier sections, deeper embedment, and engineered tie-back systems.
Bulkheads primarily retain soil and prevent bank collapse along calmer waterways. They use lighter sections and shorter embedment because the wave loading is lower.
On a 90,000-acre reservoir like Livingston or a Gulf-Coast canal, you need a true seawall. On a sheltered cove of a small private lake, a bulkhead is the right structure. We wrote a full comparison.
What materials do you use for seawalls?+
Three serious options:
- Vinyl sheet pile — the residential workhorse. Corrosion-proof, light enough for barge installs, competitive for runs up to ~200 ft.
- Steel sheet pile — the strongest section. Standard for commercial marinas, high-wave exposures, and ice-loaded sites.
- Reinforced concrete panel — premium permanent option. Heavy mass, longest service life, architectural finishes possible.

How long does a seawall last?+
Service-life expectations by material:
- Vinyl: 40+ years
- Steel (properly coated and protected): 50+ years

The variable that actually drives lifespan isn't the material — it's the tie-back system. Skipping or under-specing the deadman anchors is the #1 reason older seawalls bow outward. We size tie-backs to the design earth pressure for the full life, not the minimum needed at install.
Do I need a permit for a seawall?+
Yes — on navigable waterways, seawalls require federal (USACE), state (TCEQ), and lake-authority approval. The package typically includes:
- Site survey and dimensional drawings
- Cross-section showing sheet pile, tie-backs, and embedment
- Sediment-control plan during construction
- Disposal plan for any excavated material

How do I know if my seawall is failing?+
Warning signs in order of severity:
- Bowing or visible lean in the wall face (tie-backs failing)
- Soil washing through gaps or under the wall (toe scour)
- Cap beam cracks or settlement (the wall has shifted)
- Water pooling on the land side (drainage compromised)
Can a seawall be repaired rather than replaced?+
Sometimes. When evaluating a failing wall, the question we answer first is whether the tie-backs are still doing their job. If yes, we can often patch, re-point, and add toe armor for a fraction of replacement cost.
If the tie-backs have failed or the wall has shifted significantly, repair is throwing money at a structure that will fail again. Sometimes the right move is to add new tie-backs to a 30-year-old wall instead of replacing it — sometimes it's full demolition. We tell you which honestly at the site walk.
How do you decide which seawall material is right for my shoreline?+
Material choice is driven by wave energy, water chemistry, and design-life expectation, not aesthetics first. What's included in a seawall installation?+
Every job starts with a shoreline assessment covering wave exposure, soil borings as needed, and water-level swing, plus the USACE, TCEQ, and lake-authority permit submittals. Construction includes sheet pile installation to proper embedment depth, a tie-back anchor system sized to design pressure, a concrete or treated-timber cap beam, backfill with free-draining stone before final soil, and toe armoring with shoreline cleanup. What drives the cost of a seawall?+
The main factors are the total linear footage of shoreline to protect, the wall material (vinyl, steel, or concrete panel), the water conditions including wave energy and soil type, the tie-back anchor and deadman requirements, and the permitting complexity with any environmental buffers. Because the structure is sized to wave energy and design life rather than looks, those conditions, not a flat per-foot rate, set the number. We give a free on-site assessment to write a firm quote.
How long does seawall maintenance and inspection take over the years?+
Upkeep is light if the wall is built right. Vinyl sheet pile needs the tie-backs and cap beam inspected every 5 years. Steel needs its coating and anodes checked every 3 to 5 years. Reinforced concrete wants the joints re-pointed every 15-plus years with periodic cap-beam inspection. Across all three, the inspections center on the tie-backs and cap beam, since those are what tell you whether the wall is still holding its design line.
Should I tie my dock or dredging into the seawall project?+
Yes, bundling pays off. Tying dock framing into a new bulkhead is much cheaper than retrofitting it later, and dredging the sediment in front of a fresh seawall extends its useful life and improves access depth. You can also add a retaining wall behind the seawall so the yard is held up while the seawall holds the water out. Doing this work in one mobilization, licensed and insured since 2012, beats phasing it across separate trips.
What's the best wall material for a waterfront property?+
For waterfront retaining walls specifically:
- Concrete block (SRW) — handles moisture well, predictable performance, mid-tier cost
- Natural stone — best aesthetic match to a waterfront yard, premium pricing
- Timber — avoid within 5 feet of standing water; rot accelerates fast

Can you build a ramp on a steep or eroded bank?+
Yes. Steep or eroded banks need bank stabilization alongside the ramp:
- Side walls (retaining wall or bulkhead sections) to hold the approach
- Riprap armoring on the bank face to break wave energy
- Re-graded soil behind the armor

Vinyl, steel, or concrete for a seawall — which lasts longest?+
All three are proven, and the right pick depends on your shoreline and exposure. Vinyl sheet pile resists corrosion and rot completely and is a strong mid-range choice for most freshwater lake walls. Steel sheet pile is the strongest for high-load or eroded banks but must be specified to resist corrosion. Concrete panels are heavy-duty and long-lived where conditions suit them. We match the material to your soil, water, and wave energy at the site visit.
What maintenance does a seawall or bulkhead actually need?+
The two failure modes that matter are tie-back integrity and toe scour, so maintenance centers on keeping water from undermining the wall. That means clearing and maintaining the land-side drainage and weep holes so hydrostatic pressure can't build behind the wall, watching for soil washing through joints, and re-armoring the toe with riprap before scour gets under the footing. Catch a tie-back or scour issue early and you can often add another 15 to 25 years; ignore it and the next storm can take the wall down all at once.
Is a failing seawall or retaining wall a safety hazard, not just a repair?+
Yes. A wall that's leaning, bowing, or losing soil through its joints can fail suddenly, usually during the next storm or high-water event, and a sudden failure can take a section of yard, a structure above it, or anyone standing near it. That's why a visible lean is an immediate-assessment item, not a wait-and-see one. We check the tie-backs and toe on-site and tell you straight whether it's a controlled repair or a structure that needs to come out now.
